IPTVnator and TV Flow: which one for your Mac or PC?

IPTVnator is the best-known free, open-source IPTV player for the desktop, and it deserves that. If you are looking for an alternative, it is usually for one of two reasons: a stream that will not play in it, or a wish for something that feels more finished.

The short answer

If IPTVnator plays your playlist well, keep it: it is free and has features TV Flow lacks, including a guide grid, catch-up, Stalker portals and Linux support. Choose TV Flow if you would rather pay once for a polished Mac and Windows app with a complete Arabic interface, a tidy film and series library, and support you can write to.

What IPTVnator is

IPTVnator is an open-source desktop player by the developer 4gray, published on GitHub under the MIT licence. It is free, has no ads, and is actively developed: two releases appeared in the six weeks before we wrote this. It reads M3U playlists, Xtream Codes logins and Stalker portals, shows a programme guide, supports catch-up, and comes in nineteen languages.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Streams that will not play in the built-in player. The project’s issue tracker has long-running reports of live streams failing in the built-in player while working in VLC. The usual fix is to set IPTVnator to hand playback to an external player such as MPV or VLC, which means installing and configuring a second program.
  • It moves fast. Frequent releases bring features quickly, and now and then something that worked last month needs attention. The tracker had about 160 open issues and requests when we looked.
  • Support is the community. Help comes from GitHub issues, answered when a volunteer has time.

For many people none of this is a problem. It is simply the nature of a free project run by a small team.

Where IPTVnator is the better choice

  • You want a free player and are happy to adjust settings.
  • You use Linux, or a Stalker portal.
  • You want a full guide grid, catch-up or film downloads.
  • You prefer open-source software you can inspect and build yourself.

TV Flow does none of those four things.

Where TV Flow is the better choice

  • It plays without a second program. Live channels, films and series play inside the app, with three buffering profiles for slow or unsteady connections and the option to set the User-Agent a provider asks for.
  • It is finished. One designer’s hand throughout, light and dark looks, seven text sizes, a home screen that resumes what you were watching.
  • Arabic as a first language. A complete right-to-left layout in an Arabic typeface, not only translated labels.
  • A list that looks after itself. Channels that would not play are hidden, and a quality filter trims repeats.
  • Someone to write to. Support by email in Arabic and English.

The price is $19.99 once for one Mac or Windows computer. The first three days are free with everything unlocked, which is enough to load your own playlist in both apps and see which one you reach for.
